Sebastiano Brusco

Sebastiano Brusco scheda

I had to metabolize (or should I say gobble?) what happened in our family and I had no more will to think how to “#livebetter”, my #whenlifeisbetter had lost its magic. But I was probably on my recovery road because for few days I was thinking that It was time to come back and then yesterday it happened. Something happened that made me feel well the way it is right to feel well… this kind of wellness that relocates you in normal life… I was at a concert in a place where you can be surprised when you find a fantastic baby grand Petrof and to listen for more than an hour for some of your Chopin favourite pieces… what a luck all Chopin…
Now let me tell you about the place… in a small cross street of La Magliana! Like a lost corner of Rome for those that never go by this area… a small iron door illuminated on the banks of the Tiber, then just a courtyard and maybe a garden. You can see the Tiber actually! You can surely listen to the Tiber in a summer night, I had the immediate feeling that in the summer this hidden place must be so amazingly pleasant… from a big glass door you get in a room with tables and chairs, there’s a counter like in a bar… you can have a drink or eat something… we are in a cultural club… there is a photographic exhibition in progress but the first thing I noticed except Sebastiano Brusco talking with a lady, is the superb mahogany Petrof. So nice! It was placed on a small podium all lit up. The lighting seemed made on purpose for it… in short a place where the young can meet, speak and listen to jazz music… but yesterday everybody had come for Sebastiano and for his Chopin. Yes Sebastiano Brusco is exactly the kind of musician we can find there, a pianist that lived most of his life out of the musical world understood as “environment”. A pianist who chose not to be polluted or to compromise, this makes him different from others, free of academic or schools influences, so that his training started with an anti-academic philosophy. Although he attended courses with important and famous musicians like Aldo Ciccolini, Lya de Barberiis, Katia Labèque, and many others that I will not add. But his real teachers have been interpreters from the past through recordings. From them he drew his personal aesthetic vision on the piano playing, that makes him and his artistic taste recognizable.
Telling you about Sebastiano took us far away from the Tiber… lets go back: for this night everybody knew that they were about to live a very special moment. Everybody expected something by attending this “non academic” concert … I was expecting to receive my best medicine… please Mr. Chopin forgive me for saying this but I do mean it… I was longing to listen for sounds and the curative vibrations of the piano. Who knows why? but it is always working on me. I had no idea of the programme but I remembered he could play some ballades, he played much more… he played some études and some nocturnes.

One of these nocturnes is my favourite one… just as a dream… then an extraordinary second bis with 8 minutes of the ballade n° 1 that I can not stop listening while I am writing …
All musicians I met in my life can be classified in two simple categories: the generous ones and the non generous ones… Sebastiano is for me part of the first category, so generous…
I still remember the first time I listened to his music in a garage where we used to gather to play to be cool intellectuals. As soon as he was around people started murmuring that a very good pianist was here… without a word he used to sit and play melting his music to the chats. From noise and chats we were lead to silence and music, everybody was like petrified. Asking each other : who is he? Many years later we met again because not just by case most of my pianists friends know him, even Fabio Esta my kids piano teacher, and through all those non coincidences of life he came to my place like many other pianists and made his beautiful gift of music… You really do not need to pray him to play. He never behaves in front of us mere mortals as an unreachable artist.
The first impression is his shyness but it is only a first impact. The second one is his music and the third one is when you can finally talk to him and you modify your idea of shyness. This Sebastiano Brusco yesterday while playing Chopin took me back to the writing and made me feel good. May be exactly because he was playing in a place where you can not expect this Chopin and this super quality of music. The ticket fare was just symbolic and honestly the room was pretty full but I did wish there were more people. So what?? When it is expensive we can not afford it and when it is not expensive almost free we always have something better to do??? Yesterday it was an unmissable concert for all those reasons and more… Because Sebastiano Brusco was performing in that special place on the Tiber, because the pieces he chose were so easy for any kind of audience. I am glad I am among those who intuited that it was an unmissable concert and now I am enjoying the great effects on my mind. #whenlifeisbetter

    C’ero anch’io…
